In 1992 I was commissioned to make a memorial for a fire fighter who died in the Oakland Hills fire. It was to be in the form of a drinking fountain. The memorial was installed in a little park, with other sculpture, which was itself a memorial for the fire. https://localwiki.org/oakland/Firestorm_Memorial_Garden

I had already been interested in drinking fountains as public art that functions as public amenity. Of course, there is a long tradition of them as memorials or commemorations.

This fountain in Brownsville Oregon is particularly nice. It is dedicated to one Raymond E. Templeton who died “in an aeroplane accident” in Michigan in 1918. His connection with Brownsville is unclear.

As it is today, in situ.
I would love to see the tradition re-invigorated. “Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad,” as it says somewhere in the bible.
