The IMPORTANT PLACES Series
Michael Acker
2012

In 2011 I made a piece about Indian Springs Resort, in Calistoga, California, with the idea of bartering it, completely on spec, for spa use. Jon Merchant, one of the owners, was agreeable. I realized the Indian Springs, which we have been going to for years, was an important place for me. Thus was born the series.

The next place to be honored was the Red Barn Store at Oak Hill Farm. This truly is a special place, for its setting and the wonderful food it provides. I presented the piece to Ann Teller, the owner, who at first agreed to exchange the piece, which she loved, for produce. Unfortunately, she went back on that deal, somewhat diminishing the “importance” of the place. Never the less, I like the collage enough to keep it in the series.

The third place, getting two collages, was the Sonoma Community Center, where I work part time. I’ve spent a lot of time looking at this building and being involved with the people and events there. I can’t say enough about how important it is. Toni Castrone, the director, liked the collage a lot and has agreed to exchange with me for some work space I can use to prepare for my show in Pacifica in August 2013.

Possible future pieces/places:
Our house
Olampali
Sutro ruins

Washington places

More to come.
